In October 2025, the SUNBIO project was presented during a keynote lecture delivered by Professor Mayorkinos Papaelias from the University of Birmingham at the School of Engineering (ETSII), Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), in Ciudad Real, Spain. The session was attended by students of the MSc in Engineering programme.
During the keynote, Professor Papaelias addressed key challenges in engineering and energy production, highlighting the ongoing transition toward cleaner, smarter, and more resilient energy systems. Special emphasis was placed on the role of innovation, advanced technologies, and interdisciplinary approaches in shaping the future of engineering.
As part of the presentation, Professor Papaelias showcased SUNBIO’s contribution to marine renewable energy and environmental resilience, drawing on examples from major EU-funded projects, including MERLIN (Horizon Europe), ENDURUNS, and SUNBIO. These case studies demonstrated how research-driven solutions are advancing sustainability and technological development across the energy sector.
The event provided students with valuable exposure to cutting-edge European research and inspired critical thinking about the evolving responsibilities of engineers in addressing environmental and societal challenges. It also reinforced SUNBIO’s commitment to education, knowledge exchange, and sustainable engineering innovation.
