From 24 to 27 August 2026, the SUNBIO project was represented at ECSA 61 in Brussels, Belgium. The conference brought together an international community of researchers, professionals and policymakers to discuss advances in coastal and estuarine science and their contribution to biodiversity protection and sustainable marine management.
Damianos Chatzievangelou from the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) presented the poster “Computational workflows to monitor coastal biodiversity within the SUNBIO, REDRESS and CINNEPHILIA projects.”
The poster showcased how intelligent networks of marine observing platforms, combined with advanced computational and statistical workflows, can support reliable biodiversity monitoring across different spatial and temporal scales.
Within SUNBIO, the contribution highlighted the monitoring framework associated with the project’s renewable energy system near the OBSEA underwater observatory on the Catalan coast. A network of robotic platforms will monitor the system’s operation, the surrounding marine fauna and the restored Posidonia oceanica habitats, helping assess its environmental impact.
SUNBIO’s participation in ECSA 61 provided an important opportunity to share its research with the wider scientific community and demonstrate how innovative monitoring technologies can support the development of marine renewable energy while contributing positively to coastal biodiversity.
