On October 17, 2024, the SUNBIO project coordinator, Dr. Jacopo Aguzzi from the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), delivered an enlightening presentation at the NiD4OCEAN project’s kick-off meeting. The event was a notable gathering aimed at advancing nature-inclusive offshore energy solutions.

Dr. Aguzzi’s 30-minute talk, facilitated by Dr. Marta Moyano of the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), focused on the SUNBIO project’s commitment to sustainable and ecologically inclusive energy practices in marine settings. He outlined the project’s ambitious goals which include the development of an innovative Offshore Hybrid Renewable Energy System (OHRES). This system integrates multiple renewable energy sources while ensuring positive environmental impacts through its lifecycle, from manufacturing to decommissioning.

One of the critical components of SUNBIO is its dual objective of enhancing biodiversity alongside renewable energy generation. Dr. Aguzzi emphasized the project’s efforts in cultivating P. oceanica (seagrass) to aid carbon sequestration and biodiversity flourishing, which aligns with global carbon neutrality goals and the European Union’s biodiversity strategies.

The presentation also touched on the extensive use of cutting-edge robotic platforms and sensors for continuous ecological monitoring, reflecting SUNBIO’s innovative approach to environmental stewardship. Dr. Aguzzi’s involvement highlights the synergy between SUNBIO and NiD4OCEAN, underscoring the shared objectives of both projects in promoting sustainable energy solutions that harmonize with marine ecosystem preservation.
