SunBio

Presentation on SUNBIO’s ecological and energy sustainability monitoring solutions at MARTECH 2025.

The SUNBIO Project was presented at the 12th International Workshop on Marine Technology (MARTECH 2025), held on 28–29 May 2025 in Pasaia, Spain by Dr. Giacomo Picardi from the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC).

This event served as a valuable platform to showcase SUNBIO’s innovative approach to sustainable marine development and to engage with the global marine technology research community. The MARTECH Workshop is a well-established international venue that has brought together experts, researchers, and stakeholders in the field of marine technology since 2008. Its primary objective is to facilitate the exchange of information, research results, and perspectives on a broad range of marine technology topics, from underwater systems and robotics to oceanographic observation, data processing, and sustainability solutions.

In addition to SUNBIO, the presentation also showcased two of its sister projects:

DIGI4ECO (Digital Twin-sustained 4D Ecological Monitoring of Restoration in Fishery Depleted Areas) is a pioneering Horizon Europe project focused on using digital innovation and ecological modeling to monitor and support the restoration of overexploited marine ecosystems. By applying digital twin technology, DIGI4ECO aims to enhance understanding of climate impacts, guide sustainable human activities, and promote ecosystem resilience in fishery-depleted zones.

MERLIN :is a four-year Horizon Europe research and innovation project led by the University of Birmingham, developing long-endurance, AI-powered autonomous surface and underwater vehicles for marine missions. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells and renewable energy, these vessels perform independent or combined operations for habitat monitoring, seabed mapping, and infrastructure inspection—demonstrated in locations like OBSEA (Spain), Kolumbo volcano (Greece), and Klaipeda Port (Lithuania).

Participation in MARTECH 2025 represented a valuable opportunity for dissemination, collaboration, and visibility. The SUNBIO presentation—alongside DIGI4ECO and MERLIN—underlined the shared commitment to sustainable marine technologies, cross-sectoral learning, and evidence-based environmental action.

As SUNBIO continues its journey, it remains committed to engaging with the wider research and innovation ecosystem—working toward a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable blue future.
