On April 16, 2026, a dissemination activity of the SUNBIO project took place at the Faculty of Nautical Studies, where students of the Master’s Degree in Naval and Ocean Engineering had the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge offshore renewable energy concepts.
From 16:30 to 18:00, the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), coordinator of the SUNBIO project, delivered a lab session within the course “Ocean Energy Converters”. A total of 22 students participated in the session, gaining practical insights into the dynamics of wave energy systems.
During the lab, students worked with a simulation of a wave energy converter using OrcaFlex software. The exercise aimed to deepen their understanding of how such systems behave under different conditions and how key parameters influence energy capture efficiency.
As part of the session, Paula Espina Cámbara, PhD student at ICM-CSIC, presented the SUNBIO project as a real-world case study. This allowed students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications, highlighting how advanced simulation tools are used in actual offshore renewable energy projects.
The activity successfully bridged education and research, demonstrating how initiatives like SUNBIO contribute not only to technological innovation but also to the training of the next generation of ocean engineers.
